Knowing-in-action that centres humanising relationships on stroke units: an appreciative action research study

Abstract Background: Equal, collaborative and therapeutic relationships centred on the person affected by stroke are important for supporting recovery adjustment. However, realising these in hospital practice is challenging when there increasing focus biomedical needs organisational pressures. Despite a body of evidence advocating quality relationships, remains limited research describing how to achieve this clinical practice. This appreciative action (AAR) study aimed describe processes involved co-creating meaningful units. Design methods: An AAR approach was used develop humanising relationship-centred care (RCC) within two Participants were staff (n = 65), patients 17) relatives 7). Data generation comprised interviews, observations discussion groups. analysed collaboratively with participants using sense-making as part cyclical process. Further in-depth analysis immersion crystallisation confirmed broadened original themes. Findings: All valued similar relational experiences around human connections support existential well-being. The process supported changes self, culture units, towards increased value being placed relationships. were: (i) sensitising knowing; (ii) valuing, reflecting sharing others that co-created discourse; (iii) having freedom act, enabling connections. outcomes from build existing lifeworld-led theories through developing orientations knowing propose development RCC include values.
